Welcome!

Picture
Welcome to my webpage!  My name is John Bertetto, and I teach biological science courses at Sullivan High School in Sullivan, IL.  I am also one of the assistant coaches for the football team and the head boys track coach.  This will be my twelfth year working in Sullivan, and Sullivan is a great community to live and work in!  I grew up in the little town of Benld, IL, which is about two hours southwest of here.  I graduated from Gillespie High School, which is about the same size as Sullivan High School. I received my biology and education degrees from Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL, where I also played football for four years. I earned my master’s degree in biological sciences from Eastern Illinois University.  This will be my fourteenth year of teaching altogether. I have been married for thirteen years to my wife Lisa, who grew up in this community, and we live and own a home here in Sullivan. We also have two sons, Jack, who is four  years old and Leo, who is almost two years old.
I want all the students and parents to know that I love biology and science and hope the students learn and gain an interest also!  To do this, I plan to make class interesting, stimulating, and valuable by using hands-on activities, projects, and dissections to get the students involved.  I strive to make my classes student-centered, so we will be utilizing a lot of small group inquiry activities and using case studies to help the students get more actively involved in their learning.  The students will definitely be challenged in my classes and will have to work hard to earn the grade they desire.  My goal is to help prepare all my students for the challenges of life.  I am also committed to providing the knowledge and skills needed for success to the students who will go on to pursue further studies or careers in biology and the medical field.  I really enjoy seeing my students grow into mature, responsible young adults through their high school years, and I strive to have a positive role in this process.
I hope that all parents and students will not hesitate to call or meet with me if they have any comments, questions, or concerns throughout the year.  I am committed to helping your students learn and be successful and will do all I can to ensure this happens!
